Two Essentials For DIY Plumbing Toolkits

Posted on March 18, 2015 by hubshouthck hubshouthck

fuel hose clampWhether you continue to be inspired by a recent Super Mario Brothers binge (they just make plumbing look so cool… sure) or you want to save a little money doing at least some household repairs yourself, one thing is certain: You’re going to need some tools. Unlike some do-it-yourself (DIY) projects, plumbing is a bit more complicated. You’re going to need more than just a hammer and a handful of nails. Purchase these essentials, and you’ll be well-prepared for the most common plumbing problems.

A Hacksaw
If you’re going to be working with plumbing, you need to be able to cut through pipes. A hacksaw will do just fine. With a basic hacksaw, you’ll be able to slice clean through “metal pipe, hardware, screws, nuts and bolts, and plastic pipe,” according to Popular Mechanics. Stock up on a few extra blades for the saw, and — as always — exercise caution when handling blades.

Hose Clamps
For the best possible DIY plumbing kit, you’ll want to have several different kinds of hose clamps on-hand. Pick up large hose clamps, mini hose clamps, double hose clamps, and fuel hose clamps. Most hose clamps use a steel, metal, or plastic ring and a barb to apply even pressure from all sides; this pressure will quickly and efficiently seal any leaks. Pipes will continue to leak if you do not have the right shape and size. For that reason, it is best to keep a variety — or even to go out and purchase clamps for specific projects, if possible. For instance, a fuel hose clamp works best if you are replacing laundry room piping or automotive pipes.

If you want to save money by doing DIY plumbing repairs, you’ll have to go out and purchase the essentials. In addition to everyday tools you likely already have, you will also need a durable hacksaw and a few different types of hose clamps.
