The Invention of the Hose Clamp

Posted on March 1, 2022March 30, 2022 by Helen Sales

Just like the way the name hose clip follows, the hose was created before the clamp. In fact, the hose was invented as early as 500 BC. Therefore the hose was around for quite a while before the clamp came along. Hoses throughout the course of history were made with many different materials, animal skin, metal, hemp, and much more. Then in the 1900s, the hose clamp was invented for the modern hose. Here is a brief history of the invention of the hose clip.

So What Is a Hose Clip?

Hose clips, or clamps, are meant to help seal and stabilize any hose configuration. Ultimately, clamps help to stop moving fluid from escaping from around a configuration. Wire clamps consist of a piece of heavy wire, typically made of steel, bent, and then formed into a ring shape.

The Invention

By the time of the industrial revolution, steel and wire were being used. The wire method for a hose clip was not secure enough. This is how the hosebinder was made: a flat steel belt with a saddle and a split pin. The hose clamp followed this path. The hose clamp was invented in 1921 by a former Royal Navy Commander named Lumley Robinson. Lumley was from the British Navy and during his time there realized a new way to attach a hose to a pipe was needed. Commander Lumley Robinson died suddenly in the 1930s. His wife, Mrs. E B Lumley Robinson, took over the business and ran it herself throughout WW2.

The Hose Clamp Today

These versatile tools have been around for nearly one hundred years. Lumley founded the business L Robinson and Company (parent company of Jubilee Clips Ltd), which still operates today from a base in Gillingham, Kent.

Commander Lumley Robinson patented the worm drive hose clip, which he named the”Jubilee Clip”. Jubilee remains a registered trademark today and is known throughout the world.

That is the short history of how the hose clamp came to be. Now, this versatile tool is used all over the world by plumbers, workers, and homeowners alike. To find the best hose clamp for you, contact us, the Hose Clamp Kings, today.
