What Are Hose Clamps Traditionally Used For?

stainless-steel clampWhen it comes to types of hose clamps, you may be familiar with their use in DIY plumbing and quick fixes on the average vehicle. In fact, a stainless-steel clamp is often used as a heavy duty zip tie or even a replacement for duct tape.

But what is a hose clamp specifically designed for? And how is it meant to be properly used outside of your everyday DIY project?

The Hose Clamp: The Reliable Clamp For Every Project
A hose clip, or hose clamp, can be used for a variety of projects but is specifically meant to be used to seal a hose to a fitting. When a stainless-steel clamp is secured to a fitting, it prevents fluid from the hose from leaking out.

For this reason, hose clamps are often used in DIY plumbing projects to clamp down on a line until a professional can be called. They’re also often used in automotive systems.

To use a stainless-steel clamp, begin by expanding the clamp. This is done by turning the screw counterclockwise. Once the clamp is large enough to fit over the hose, slide the hose clamp over the hose and slide the hose over the fitting. Once the hose is attached to the fitting, turn the screw on the stainless-steel clamp clockwise so it contracts and tightens on the hose.

If you’re unable to slide the hose clamp over the hose, you can keep turning the screw on the clamp counterclockwise until it completely opens up. This way, you can wrap it around the hose rather than slide it. To close the clamp, carefully push the end of the band back through the slot and turn the screw clockwise.

For those using hose clamps on a motor vehicle, both screw and spring style hose clamps can be used for your project. However, it’s essential to choose the rise size hose clamp. This is because a hose clamp that’s too large may not be able to secure well to the hose and a hose clamp that’s too small may not have the bandwidth you need for your project.

Hose clamps can be used to secure power steering hoses, brake lines, radiator hoses, and more. For more information on hose clamps for your project, contact Hose Clamp Kings today.
