How to Determine the Size of Hose Clamp You Need

Posted on June 7, 2023 by hubshouthck hubshouthck

You’ve got a hose (not a garden hose) that you want to put over a spigot or barb, but you need a hose clamp to keep the fluid from leaking out and wasting water. While these clamps do come in a variety of sizes, you want to get the right one. How do you determine that?

There are a few ways that you can do this. The methods require minimal equipment and you can do the job in a few minutes. Most of them are simple one-step ways, but there’s one that requires two steps. Read on to learn more.

Use Calipers

Take a caliper and set it on the ground. Put your hand through the opening of the hose and then hold it between the two ends of the caliper. Take those measurements and then compare them to a chart of different hose sizes. Then you will have the answers that you want. You may need extra large hose clamps.

Use a Tape Rule

If you’re not able to get calipers, then this is another good way to measure the hose. Make sure to use a narrow one and wrap it around the hose and take note of the circumference. There’s a formula that you can use, known as the Nominal Application Diameter, which is ND= c(the circumference)/3.1416

Use a “Pi” Tape Rule

People who paid attention in math class might recognize the above number as being “Pi.” There’s a tape rule that uses this. You use the tape rule around the outer diameter of the hose. Then you’ll be able to figure out the clamp size.

Measure the Outer Part and the Thickness

You can take the calipers and measure both the outside of the hose and the thickness of the material of the hose. Combine those with the formula ND= d + (2 x t) to get your results. You might find that you need extra large hose clamps to get the job done.

If you do the above things when you’re getting ready to purchase your hose clamps, you should be in good shape when it’s time to use the hose. Then you’ll be able to enjoy running water through it without worrying about any leaks. Are you looking for extra large hose clamps? Contact us today!
