The Biggest Threats to Your Hose Clamp

Posted on July 11, 2023September 12, 2023 by Helen Sales

Hose clamps are an important part of any hose system. Ensuring that clamps are installed properly and functioning properly is crucial to the safety of the application in which you are using the clamps. Let’s look at some of the common mistakes that are made when using premium hose clamps.

Mismatching Material

It might be tempting to match different materials between hoses and clamps if you are in a hurry or can’t find the proper matching hose and clamp. However, this often proves to be a critical mistake. Hoses that are made of soft material such as silicone or rubber are often damaged if they are matched together with a hard material clamp. For instance, stainless steel clamps shouldn’t be used with soft material hoses. Another form of mismatching can be to mismatch sizes. When this happens the danger is that overtightening will be used to make everything fit. This will usually result in a leak.

Disregarding Clamp Size

Clamps are not a one size fits all component. If you use the wrong size clamp it will not hold properly. Either it will be too loose or it will be too tight. Neither of these is preferred. To choose the right hose clamp size, you need to measure the outside of whatever you’ll be clamping. You need the outside diameter to ensure that the clamp will fit well.

Clamping For Long Term

Unless the premium hose clamps are part of the original construction of the hose system, you don’t want to simply use a clamp to try to solve a problem long-term. A clamp can be used on a problem short term to keep things under control until you can permanently solve the issue. But using clamps to solve problems long-term is not a great idea. What usually happens is that the clamp will eventually fail because it is not an original part of the hose system design. This is especially true for plumbing issues. If you use a clamp to fix a plumbing issue that really needs further attention, you will just wind up with a bigger problem to fix later.
